Despite technology becoming increasingly dematerialised we are still tied to physical interfaces that control it. Imagine if you could hold a pool of light of in your hand. Móta gives ‘physical’ properties to grains of light to create a volumetric display controlled by gesture. Móta creates the appearance of a 3D cloud of light particles on a 2D surface. It invites us to interact with the cloud as if each light particle possessed physical form. The physicality of the particles interacts with our own physicality to create a real and intuitive form of interaction. On the Guzheng each string is divided into two notes and can be bent while played to change pitch or create vibrato. On the Q-Zheng two strings (high and low) are strung between pulleys mounted on the face at various lengths to create a scale of notes. The constant ratio maintains the harmony in the notes, while the pitch can be bent by lowering or increasing the tension by rotating the face as the strings are attached to a fixed point outside the frame. The strings are hit by levers attached to solenoidsunder the rotating face which is attached to aworm gear on a DC motor. It showcases the work of the Imperial College Advanced Hackspace, Imperial College London and the Innovation Design Engineering masters program at the Royal College of Art, but more importantly the unlimited potential of a multidisciplinary team. The installation is a physical manifestation of the ideation process. Every great idea starts with a spark of inspiration - that initial seed of a thought that has the potential to grow from nothing into a masterpiece. Take a ball, and customise it with your ‘spark’. Then follow its journey through the chaotic world of Continuum and watch it evolve through the innovation process into something extraordinary. "Continuum was a truly unique way to showcase the work of the Imperial College Advanced Hackspace. The creativity and ingenuity of the team enabled them to negotiate the tight schedule and restrictions of working within a historic building to create an activity which was not compromised. The hugely ambitious installation illustrated complex ideas, transforming conceptual thinking into a hands on activity. It is this approach to public engagement that I found most beneficial to the Friday Late programme – using a playful vehicle to discuss a wider topic or idea.
